Home > Reform Treaty

.

The Reform Treaty (also referred to as; "future institutional settlement" or "new legal basis", or "simplified treaty", among others) is a proposed replacement for the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe. The current draft is entitled the "Draft Treaty Amending the Treaty on European Union and the Treaty Establishing the European Community". While the Constitution attempted to replace all earlier EU treaties, the Reform Treaty amends the Treaty on the European Union (Maastricht) and the Treaty Establishing the European Community (Rome).

25 March: EU leaders vowed to put the EU on a "renewed common basis before the European Parliament elections in 2009" at the celebrations of the EU's 50th anniversary in Berlin.
21-22 June: At the European Council, a detailed IGC mandate was agreed.
23-24 July: The Intergovernmental Conference was opened by the Portuguese Presidency.
18-19 Oct: The final text of the Reform Treaty will be signed at an informal Council in Lisbon.
June 2009: Before the European Parliament elections the ratification process should be finalised.
